2011 toyota prius review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Recently redesigned hybrid easy on emissions, gas. introductionthe toyota prius was redesigned for 2010, sleeker and more powerful, while delivering an improved epa-rated 51/48 mpg city/highway. It's unchanged for 2011.  for 2010, the hybrid mechanicals were lightened by 65 pounds and made stronger. But the prius still gained 110 pounds overall, mostly from its stiffer body structure. The 1. 8-liter gas engine was new, more powerful and efficient. Acceleration performance is lethargic: 0 to 60 mph in 9. 8 seconds. The cvt, or continuously variable transmission, is smooth.  there are three driving modes: ev, eco and power. We drove a prototype around town for one week, and got about 11 miles to a charge, but the range might be increased for the production model.  driving the prius is easy. Handling is easy if not nimble at slow speeds, and the brakes are sensitive while being stacked with electronic capabilities for safety. The ride feels stiff, most noticeable over jagged slow bumps, and interior noise is surprisingly high despite increased sound insulation. Input comes from the pilot at the controls on the steering wheel, including not just audio and cruise control, but also climate control and trip computer, with telephone and other controls available. Both these changes are on the 2011 model. Optional safety equipment includes a pre-collision system that uses the same radar antenna as the radar cruise control. It applies the brakes harder than the driver does if a collision is imminent and applies them even if the driver doesn't to reduce the collision impact by 0. 7g. walkaroundthere were significant changes in the 2010 redesign of the prius, resulting in a sleeker car. The taillights are standard led, reducing power draw by 88 percent.  the rear wiper is huge, and effective in keeping rain off all that glass back there. The matt black trim around the windows on the prius ii and iii trim levels doesn't do much to complement the car; the satin black finish on the prius iv and v is nicer. interiorthe prius interior is satisfying, at least with the optional leather we tested. There's a nice cozy cockpit feeling in the driver's seat, nestled by a stylish center console that runs from dashboard to between the seats at a gentle slope. The cvt shift lever is located there, just ahead of the world's easiest-to-reach cubby. Inconveniently, the seat-heater button is located on the floor under the console, as if they ran out of wire and it couldn't reach.  the front seats are comfortable with good bolstering and adjustability. The trim looks nice, ecologically friendly plastic made of plant-derived resin with excellent recycling characteristics. The upper and lower gloveboxes hold a magnificent 12 liters.  there's 36 inches of rear legroom, not bad at all, and the 60/40 split rear seats have a folding center armrest with two cupholders, for when there's not a third passenger back there.  when the seats are dropped flat, there's nearly 39. 6 cubic feet of cargo volume, easily accessible through the big liftgate. We hauled seven 16-inch wheels shod with dunlop racing tires in the back. The eighth had to ride in the front seat, but we were impressed with the cargo capacity.  and there's another 2 cubic feet in the tray for tools and laptops, hiding under the floor of the cargo area. The compact spare tire is another level down. It's fun to watch the multi-function display of the instrument panel, although the novelty might wear off. The larger engine provides more torque, allowing the prius to maintain freeway speeds at lower rpm, boosting fuel mileage. It's an atkinson cycle engine (different valve timing and breathing). Seamless, flawless transportation. introductionthe toyota camry is the best-selling car in america, the crown jewel of cars in the auto industry. Toyota tells us the name 'camry' comes from kan-muri, which in japanese means 'crown.' that seems appropriate given that the camry outsells such popular gems as the honda accord and ford taurus.  the camry appears to be a perfect transportation appliance, flawlessly performing its duties, never annoying its owner. It rides smoothly, softly over beat-up city streets. The interior is ergonomically excellent, with big climate and audio knobs that are easy to adjust. The seats are comfortable.  the toyota camry was all-new last year. A longer wheelbase brought significantly increased rear-seat legroom. All models now come with remote keyless entry, while the xle model adds fog lights, and a six-disc cd changer for its jbl audio system. Either way, it comes with air conditioning, power windows, power mirrors, power locks and remote keyless entry, a 60/40 split rear seat, and visor vanity mirrors.  se is a sportier version of the le. Higher-rate springs, shocks, and anti-roll bars contribute to crisper handling, along with higher-effort steering and bigger wheels and tires. Outside, black trim at the front end, a spoiler at the rear, and unique black pearl badging distinguish the se. A three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel and lots of bright trim add zing to the interior. Se lists for $20,310 with the manual gearbox, $21,140 with the automatic.  the cushiest camry is the xle, featuring luxury appointments such as wood-grain trim, power driver and passenger seats, automatic air conditioning, an alarm system, a cargo net, and a rear-window sunshade. All-new last year, the v6 develops 192 horsepower at 5300 rpm, and 209 pounds-feet at 4400. Both engines are all aluminum for light weight.  the le v6 lists for $22,260; the se v6 for $23,700; and the xle v6 for $25,405. Look for an all-new solara to debut as 2004 model.  . walkaroundthe toyota camry was totally redesigned last year, but the new look did not stray too far from that of previous models. Ford lost quite a few sales before retreating to a safer design.  so while toyota claims to have put more excitement into the current camry, in truth it looks a lot like the old camry. Ironically, the most-changed elements are the rear deck and taillights, and these have a distinctly taurus flavor. The front of the camry appears to have a bit of lincoln ls in it, thanks to the way the grille cuts into the top edge of the front bumper.  the camry does present a more sculptured appearance, with slightly flared wheel arches and a distinct dual crease line in the hood, the latter leading nicely into the grille. To some extent its smooth lines camouflage its height; the current car stands two inches taller than the pre-2002 model.  . interiorthe toyota camry has a comfortable interior with controls that are simple and easy to operate. Everything is laid out simply.  radio and climate controls are mounted high in the center of the dash for easy access. Three big knobs mounted prominently in the center of the dashboard are used to manually control heating, ventilation, and air conditioning on se and le models. Xle models get automatic climate control with a smooth tactile feel that reminds us of lexus, which set the modern standard. The stereo uses big buttons and knobs that are easy to operate, whether scanning for radio stations or moving between songs on a cd. A navigation system is available for the xle. We found the audio quality poor on the le's optional jbl system.  the instruments are located in a relatively small pod right in front of the steering wheel, with a large half-moon tachometer and matching speedometer. The fuel and temperature gauges are located within the two larger instruments. Lights and windshield wiper/washer controls are on stalks on the steering column, leaving the left lower edge of the dash free of switches.  camry's dashboard is relatively plain, with no large curved surfaces, and it is set relatively high. The dash blends nicely into the door panels, but the cover for the passenger-side air bag is noticeable as the seams show clearly. Many other manufacturers have managed to make the passenger-side air bag invisible.  a wide center console separates the two front bucket seats and contains useful storage areas. The parking brake on the le and se is also located in the center console, whereas the xle gets a foot-operated parking brake.  rear-seat passengers will find the accommodations quite pleasant for a mid-size passenger car. Head- and legroom have increased compared to the previous camry. The rear seat splits 60/40, allowing long objects to pass through from the trunk, although the opening is smaller than it might be. The trunk itself is a decent size and shape. Gooseneck hinges steal valuable space, but are hidden under a cover, reducing the chance that they will damage trunk contents as the lid is closed.  . driving impressiontoyota knows how to build quiet cars with a comfortable ride. Toyota's lexus division has excelled in this area and this expertise appears to have worked its way over to the camry. Engines are quieter than in pre-2002 models, while an innovative engine mounting system further reduces vibration. There is nothing untoward or strange about the camry; it does everything just right. An enthusiast driver would complain that it lacks character, but for the average driver that's a plus. The 2. 4-liter inline-4 is inexpensive and fuel-efficient and provides plenty of power. Computer logic controls the automatic transmission; the car can tell when it is going up hill or down hill and the transmission shifts gears accordingly. It can hold a lower gear longer when necessary to avoid the annoying shifting up and down that occurs in some automatics.  the ride is pleasant, verging on luxurious, with enough cushioning to make passengers feel comfortable. The steering is light but not sloppy. That means it is not connected directly to the engine by a cable; instead, it activates a sensor connected to a computer, just like the controls in modern aircraft. One advantage of this arrangement is that the optional vehicle skid control system can take over the throttle in an emergency and apply just the right amount of throttle and braking to keep the vehicle on a more stable path.  . summarytoyota admits that while few people aspire to own a camry, lots of people recommend a camry to their friends. The camry is what's known as a safe buy. It is in many ways an unremarkable car, except for its total lack of identifiable flaws. It toyota has tried hard to make the latest camry a little more exciting while at the same time making sure it will still transport its occupants from a to b and back without any drama, nor any worries about reliability, year in and year out.  so the toyota camry is not be as exciting as the nissan altima or volkswagen passat. Special interior and exterior trim distinguishes the xrs. Additional standard equipment includes anti-lock brakes with tire-pressure monitors, front and rear disc brakes, and cruise control. walkaroundthe corolla looks like a small camry. Its ovoid headlights are similar and its rakish yet curved shape is in keeping with the camry and lexus es 330. Thick a-pillars at the front and thick c-pillars at the rear give the corolla a solid look while hefty bumpers add to its substantial appearance.  corolla comes standard with 15-inch steel wheels, but looks like it could do with larger wheels and tires that would fill out the wheel wells more effectively. Aluminum 15-inch wheels 390) are an option for le models.  at the rear, the corolla has a high trunk line in keeping with the car's high belt line. The taillights match the shape of the headlights nicely. Part of the taillight module is actually mounted in the trunk lid. This is fine except that the design causes the trunk lid to be narrower than it might be.  the doors have reasonably wide openings, which makes getting in and out easy. That's a benefit of the long wheelbase (102. 4 inches), which also means that the rear wheel wells do not protrude into the rear door as much as they do on some compact cars. The corolla's looks and handling are enhanced by its relatively long wheelbase and relatively short overhangs front and rear. (the overhang is the distance from the wheels to the ends of the car).  the corolla s is distinguished by its sporty front spoiler, body-colored side rocker panels and rear skirt, along with its fog lamps and smoked headlamp masking.  the xrs gets 16-inch wheels that visually fill the wheel wells better. Distinguishing the xrs are a rear color-keyed spoiler, a color-keyed bezel surrounding the grille, and unique badges. interiorthe corolla's interior doesn't feel like a small car nor does it feel cheap, like many compacts do.  there's plenty of front legroom and headroom. The corolla seems particularly well suited to shorter people who often find it fits them perfectly. Big and tall people may find the accommodations cramped, however.  the back seats offer a decent amount of room for two average-size adults. Seat belts are provided for a third rear-seat passenger, but there's little space for such a person.  materials used in the seats appear classy with nice fit and finish. The leather seats have a luxurious soft pleated finish, while the center console and door panels have wood-like veneer trim. Okay, it's fake, but it's so well made that it looks more realistic than the real wood found in some luxury cars. Both the le and s models get a sporty leather-wrapped steering wheel that adds to the enjoyment of driving.  the xrs gets sport seats, a silver-colored instrument cluster and switch plates, lexus-like optitron gauges, and a leather-like shift boot and leather shift knob.  the dashboard is nicely laid out with exemplary ergonomics and a finish comparable to that of more expensive cars. Its top surface sweeps across the width of the car in a slight s-curve and wraps into the door trim. Each side of the center console seamlessly blends up to the lower portion of the dash. Three large round knobs for the heating and air conditioning system are located below the radio. The handle for the parking brake is located on the left of the center console so there's room for a small storage cubbyhole on the right.  storage space is generous. The glove box is big and there are small pockets in each door. Map lights for upper models are mounted on the rearview mirror, not the ideal location as it's easy to mess up the mirror adjustment when trying to switch on a light.  the instrument panel is dominated by three overlapping round gauges, a large speedometer, a smaller tachometer to the left and a water temperature gauge and fuel gauge mounted in a matching circle to the right. They incorporate red lettering on a plain white background and are easy to read at night. There's also an outside temperature readout on all models.  the trunk is one of the biggest in this class. The gooseneck hinges intrude into the cargo space and can crush fragile items if they are in the way, but.

Toyota claims the camry is the safest, quietest, most fuel-efficient car in its class, and we have no reason to doubt those claims.  camry was completely redesigned for the 2012 model year and carries into the 2013 model largely unchanged, though the 2013 camry does benefit from some additional equipment upgrades. Bluetooth wireless phone connectivity is standard across the 2013 camry line. The blind spot monitor adds a rear cross traffic alert function and is available on more models for 2013. 2013 camry hybrid models now sport the same soft-touch inner door panels as the non-hybrid camry models. Leather-equipped 2013 camrys feature accent stitching on the inner doors.  this seventh-generation toyota camry is an attractive car, with clean sides and nice edges. It's about the same size as the 2007-11 models. Benefitting from the latest impact energy management engineering, it's built on a rigid chassis using a lot of high-strength steel and ultra high-strength steel.  the interior is nice, the leather dashboard neat and stylish, the instrument panel pretty and functional. The 3. 5-liter v6 produces 268 horsepower. Toyota boasts a range of almost 600 miles.  the tuned suspension in the sporty camry se might be too firm for some; we didn't find the camry se uncomfortable, but we did find the softer camry xle more relaxing around town. We preferred the se's tighter steering in all circumstances.  the camry hybrid uses a 2. 5-liter atkinson cycle engine, with more horsepower and electric power than in previous generations. It feels like a totally different car than other models, as it slows everything down and makes the vehicle feel bigger. The environmental protection agency rates the 2013 camry hybrid le at 43/39 mpg city/highway, camry hybrid xle at 40/38 mpg. lineupthe 2013 toyota camry comes in five models. The camry look svelte, with no lumpy cladding and almost no chrome.  though about the same size as the previous-generation version, the current model did lose weight in the re-design, 150 pounds (220 pounds for the hybrid). It might all be under the skin, but no matter, it's all good. What toyota calls aero-corner design enhances this image. Hips and shoulders tucked in.  wheels help distinguish the trim levels. Camry le uses wheelcovers over 16-inch steel wheels, camry xle uses 17-inch alloy wheels, camry se uses 17- or 18-inchers. All three styles successfully avoid cookie cutting, with the le's 20-spoke titanium-tinted wheelcovers ironically being the most ambitious and eye-catching, if not the classiest.  the roofline angles the windshield steeply. There's a nice character line under the windows slanting slightly up to the rear deck, where there's a small spoiler lip on the se. Windows are outlined in chrome, but no more, except for a thin strip at the rocker level on the le and xle. Body-colored door handles on all models.  the face of the camry se is tweaked, for the better, with body color over the black mesh grille, and more aggressive air intakes in the valance under the bumper. Headlamps are outlined in black, angled, narrow and sleek, with a neat little notch in the line at the bottom. interiorinterior dimensions for the seventh-generation (2012-13) camry are within fractions of an inch of the sixth-generation (2007-11) models. There's a bit more backseat legroom, with 38. 9 inches on a flat rear floor decent for a midsize car. Some interior parts have been thinned to create more eye, knee and elbow room: a-pillars, control panels on the doors, front seatbacks, center console.  interior materials are different on different trim levels. Camry l, le and xle use a nice fabric, while the camry se uses a combination of fabric with softex synthetic leather trim. Real leather is available on camry xle, with leather-trimmed ultrasuede available on the se and xle hybrid.  the fit of the front buckets is good on the camry le and xle, with more bolstering on the se. The camry hybrid has its own material, more like the se. Trims are different too: le is silver, xle wood, se silver grain, and hybrid a metallic tech grain.  we found the driver's position comfortable, with thoughtful padding for the driver's right leg against the center console, and high armrests. The standard leather is overlapped in an arc with neat stitching, for a saddle-like effect; new passengers will compliment it and maybe run their hands over the seam. The little window for the clock up at the top looks like a hood scoop.  instruments on most models are in 3d. The instruments themselves are the same, the only difference is in the rings around the gauges, chrome or satin.  the hybrid's panel is the same only prettier. It has optitron meters with white illumination, blue metallic printing, and white lighting pointer. Cargo space in the camry hybrid is 13. 1 cubic feet, a decent-size trunk.  trunk space on all other camry models is a roomy 15. 4 cubic feet.  the manually operated climate control has big dials and easy buttons on the camry le. The automatic climate control on camry xle uses a 6. 1-inch lcd touch-screen also used for radio tuning and navigation. Safely and simply they say, and we say don't believe it. 2002 toyota 4runner review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Off-road capability and comfort. introductiontoyota 4runner is enjoyable to drive. Its coil-spring rear suspension gives it surprisingly good handling. This is one of the tougher trucks in toyota's lineup and one of the tougher trucks available from anyone. 4runner is built on a truck chassis and it's set up to venture away from civilized roads with lots of suspension travel. A bulge in the hood, flared fenders with shoulders give it a purposeful look. Tubular-shaped running boards add to the rugged appearance. It's been around awhile now: the last complete redesign was in 1996. interioras with all toyotas, the 4runner accommodates its passengers well. The rear seat is split 50/50. This was useful when three of us drove to a restaurant with all of my fishing gear, including some two-piece nine-foot fly rods.  as a result of the ground clearance necessary to deal with serious off-road use, the 4runner sits somewhat higher than some of the competition. This means that shorter people may find it less convenient to get in and out. There's nothing goofy here, no awkward result of some stylist's whim. Just simple, appreciated correctness, which adds up to a high degree of operating ease. The instrument panel is arranged for sensible visibility and operation of all control functions. Map pockets, glove boxes, cubbyholes and cup holders add to happiness during long trips.  a center differential lock switch located on the instrument panel allows locking and unlocking of the center differential by pressing a button. This lets the driver make the choice of positively locking both rear wheels and one of the fronts together, meaning at least three tires will be clawing their way through muck or slush.  the bottoms of the rear seats flip up and the seat backs fold down, presenting a large, flat cargo area. The rear seat headrests are conveniently stored by sticking them into a pair of holes on the seat bottom. There was plenty of room for fishing rods and a couple of duffel bags of gear. I stopped at dawn on a long drive from north carolina to washington, d. First, the spare tire is mounted underneath, so it doesn't interfere with cargo access, and doesn't intrude on cargo space. Second, access to the rear is through a hatch with a separate opening window. The 4runner comes with well-designed big side mirrors, which provide excellent rearward visibility. For all-around convenience, the 4runner is one of the best of the mid-size (so-called compact) sport-utilities. driving impressiontoyota's 4runner showed off its impressive highway performance on a lengthy drive through virginia and north carolina. I was headed to harker's island near the southernmost tip of north carolina's outer banks to go fishing and quickly found the 4runner is extremely stable at high speeds.  one of the nicest features is the 3. 4-liter v6 engine. Though it lacks the stump-pulling grunt of the v8s available in some of the competition, it's exceptionally high in smoothness and driving pleasure, with excellent throttle response and a silky feel throughout its wide rev range. And there's more than enough power to deal with a full load of passengers, luggage and a medium-sized trailer.  toyota's 3. 4-liter twin-cam v6 delivers 183 horsepower and 217 pound-feet of torque. It's rated to tow trailers up to 5000 pounds.  from a handling standpoint, the 4runner has one of the best chassis and suspension arrangements in its class. While some mid-size sport-utilities have front suspensions of struts or even live axles, the 4runner has an independent suspension with upper and lower control arms and coil springs. In the rear, the axle is mounted with a multi-link arrangement and coil springs instead of the more common, and less sophisticated, leaf springs. The 4runner also has the precise feel of rack-and-pinion steering and a tidy turning circle of 37. 4 feet. The result is a combination of ride comfort and handling ease that is exceptionally good for a vehicle of such outstanding off-road and rough-road capabilities.  living with the 4runner and driving it on a daily basis is easy and free of hassles. About the only negative i logged was that, like most compact suvs, the 4runner does not provide good grip on wet pavement. The rear tires will often spin when trying to take off aggressively in the rain.  we also had the chance to take the 4runner off-road. Everything about it is correctly done.
