2011 toyota prius review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Recently redesigned hybrid easy on emissions, gas. introductionthe toyota prius was redesigned for 2010, sleeker and more powerful, while delivering an improved epa-rated 51/48 mpg city/highway. It's unchanged for 2011.  for 2010, the hybrid mechanicals were lightened by 65 pounds and made stronger. But the prius still gained 110 pounds overall, mostly from its stiffer body structure. The 1. 8-liter gas engine was new, more powerful and efficient. Acceleration performance is lethargic: 0 to 60 mph in 9. 8 seconds. The cvt, or continuously variable transmission, is smooth.  there are three driving modes: ev, eco and power. We drove a prototype around town for one week, and got about 11 miles to a charge, but the range might be increased for the production model.  driving the prius is easy. Handling is easy if not nimble at slow speeds, and the brakes are sensitive while being stacked with electronic capabilities for safety. The ride feels stiff, most noticeable over jagged slow bumps, and interior noise is surprisingly high despite increased sound insulation. Input comes from the pilot at the controls on the steering wheel, including not just audio and cruise control, but also climate control and trip computer, with telephone and other controls available. Both these changes are on the 2011 model. On the brake issue, toyota took a bum rap because nothing was found to be wrong except the drivers' experience, not to mention the media blow-up. lineupthe 2011 toyota prius comes in five trim levels, counting the stripped-down fleet model, prius i 21,650). Navigation with safety connect is optional.  prius v 28,320) adds 17-inch alloy wheels, led headlamps, and foglamps. The advanced technology package 5,080) features a pre-collision system that automatically dabs the brakes and reduces crash impact speed by a slight amount, radar cruise control, lane keep assist, intelligent park assist, and the navigation package.  safety equipment standard on all models includes dual-stage front airbags, side airbags in front, airbag curtains, and driver's knee airbag; active headrests; tire pressure monitor with warning light; anti-lock brakes with brake assist and brake force distribution; and a sophisticated stability control system working with traction control. Optional safety equipment includes a pre-collision system that uses the same radar antenna as the radar cruise control. It applies the brakes harder than the driver does if a collision is imminent and applies them even if the driver doesn't to reduce the collision impact by 0. 7g. walkaroundthere were significant changes in the 2010 redesign of the prius, resulting in a sleeker car. The coefficient of drag was reduced to 0. 25 from 0. 26, enabling the prius to continue its rein as one of the world's most slippery passenger cars. It's about half an inch longer, all in the cowl, a result of a-pillars that are moved forward to radically rake the windshield; and about 3/4-inch wider. The roof is the same height, but its apex was moved back 3. 9 feet, smoothing the aerodynamic wedge. It's got a discreet double hump that adds character and curiosity.  the upper grille opening is smaller and tidier to more efficiently move air over the hood. A new lip over the rear deck not only improves air flow, it eliminates the chopped-off-tail look of the previous prius. The fender arches are a bit more aggressive, almost bulkier looking, but they reflect additional aero improvement. The bumpers are sharper and squarer at the corners than before. There's a styling tweak, like a wave or a lip or, with a stretch of the imagination, a lightning bolt at the top, and it works, to deliver distinction. The taillights are standard led, reducing power draw by 88 percent.  the rear wiper is huge, and effective in keeping rain off all that glass back there. The matt black trim around the windows on the prius ii and iii trim levels doesn't do much to complement the car; the satin black finish on the prius iv and v is nicer. interiorthe prius interior is satisfying, at least with the optional leather we tested. There's a nice cozy cockpit feeling in the driver's seat, nestled by a stylish center console that runs from dashboard to between the seats at a gentle slope. The cvt shift lever is located there, just ahead of the world's easiest-to-reach cubby. Inconveniently, the seat-heater button is located on the floor under the console, as if they ran out of wire and it couldn't reach.  the front seats are comfortable with good bolstering and adjustability. The trim looks nice, ecologically friendly plastic made of plant-derived resin with excellent recycling characteristics. The upper and lower gloveboxes hold a magnificent 12 liters.  there's 36 inches of rear legroom, not bad at all, and the 60/40 split rear seats have a folding center armrest with two cupholders, for when there's not a third passenger back there.  when the seats are dropped flat, there's nearly 39. 6 cubic feet of cargo volume, easily accessible through the big liftgate. We hauled seven 16-inch wheels shod with dunlop racing tires in the back. The eighth had to ride in the front seat, but we were impressed with the cargo capacity.  and there's another 2 cubic feet in the tray for tools and laptops, hiding under the floor of the cargo area. The compact spare tire is another level down. It's fun to watch the multi-function display of the instrument panel, although the novelty might wear off. The larger engine provides more torque, allowing the prius to maintain freeway speeds at lower rpm, boosting fuel mileage. It's an atkinson cycle engine (different valve timing and breathing). Co2 emissions have been reduced from a score that already tops the charts.  the hybrid synergy drive system, with two compact motor generators within the transaxle, deliver. Sporty compact sedan and hatch. introductionthe mazda3 is a sporty alternative to the honda civic and toyota corolla. Launched as a 2010 model, the current-generation mazda3 got a refresh for 2012, including mazda's skyactiv technology.  the mazda3 looks smooth, pretty and aerodynamic. The sedan boasts a smooth 0. 27 coefficient of drag, while the five-door gets a 0. 29 cd, slippery for a hatchback. This reduces wind noise and improves fuel economy. Skyactiv is the most fuel-efficient of the lineup, with an epa-estimated 27/39 mpg with the standard 6-speed manual, and an impressive 28/40 mpg city/highway with the optional 6-speed automatic. A 6-speed manual is the only available transmission. It's fun to drive, but fuel economy suffers with a mediocre 18/25 mpg city/highway.  the mazda3 models have nice interiors with terrific seats. Controls are intuitive and easy to reach and use. The center stack is clean, the gauges clear, and digital information accessed by a thumb scroll on the steering wheel. Both come with 60/40 split folding rear seats, and they fold nearly flat, so the cargo space can be expanded enormously. In a pinch, the sedan can carry most of what the hatchback can.  ride quality is firmer on the mazda3 than on most competitors, and could be deemed harsh by someone used to driving a corolla. The suspension on all mazda3 models deliver a feel that's more european than japanese. Harsh patches and rough roads never made the ride uncomfortable, however. Mazda3 is front-wheel drive.  the mazda3 is a great alternative for those who want a compact sedan with sporty driving dynamics. Mazda3 competes directly with honda civic and toyota corolla, chevrolet cruze, hyundai elantra. The hatchback also competes with the ford focus hatch or hyundai elantra gt. It's powered by a 263-hp turbocharged 2. 3-liter inline-4 that's mated to a 6-speed manual transmission, and uses a limited-slip differential. Exterior features include a unique front grille, 18-inch alloy wheels, foglights and a unique rear roof spoiler.  a variety of packages and stand-alone options are available for each trim level.  safety equipment on all 2013 mazda3 models includes dual front airbags, front side airbags, curtain side airbags, active front head restraints, and anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution. The front fascia below the bumper looks great, even if the sporty black air intakes are more cosmetic than functional.  front fenders are puffed out forward of the wheels. The sedan's coefficient of drag is 0. 27 cd, with the 5-door hatchback at 0. 29 cd. Those are great numbers for a hatchback that isn't also a fastback (like the audi a7).  rear bumpers on mazda3i models are clean and body-colored. On upper trim levels, 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels are sporty and handsome. Thanks in part to those wheels, it looks like it's moving even when it's standing still. interiorevery control on the mazda3 instrument panel is intuitive and easy to reach and use. The center stack is clean, the gauges are clear, and digital information is accessed by a thumb scroll on the steering wheel. In fact, mazda3 is one of the only cars in its class with standard steering-wheel controls. The digital information is easy to read in the sun, at least in the skyactiv models, with blue meter illumination. Others have gray, and the mazdaspeed3 is red.  we drove a mazda3 with terrific leather seats, and one with cloth seats, same padding and bolstering but firmer, maybe because cloth skin gets stretched more, and leather has inherent cushioning.  the sedan's trunk has 11. 8 cubic feet of space, and the hatchback has 17 cubic feet behind the rear seat. The rear seats are split 60/40, and they fold nearly flat, so the cargo space can be expanded enormously.  the 6-speed automatic transmission can be switched to manual mode and shifted with the gated lever. The shift action is another place where mazda logic rules: the lever goes back to upshift, forward to downshift, as in many race cars, because those directions flow with the g-forces on the body during acceleration and deceleration. It's a feel thing, not a think thing. driving impressionthe 2. 0-liter skyactiv powertrain performs ideally. We tested it hard, and it works. The engine makes 155 horsepower and 148 foot-pounds of torque, enough for plenty of acceleration.

2010 chrysler town & country review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Family-friendly minivan. introductionminivans offer roominess, convenience, versatility and fuel efficiency. There is no more sensible choice for a family with more than a couple of children. Chrysler was the first into this market and, long after other manufacturers have left it, chrysler remains, with the chrysler town & country and the dodge caravan. Of the two, the town & country is generally more upscale, and chrysler bills the town & country as the ultimate family friendly vehicle.  the 2010 chrysler town & country is offered with three v6 engines. The base engine, a 3. 3-liter v6 or 175 horsepower, doesn't offer much in the way of either power or fuel efficiency. The 3. 8-liter v6, with 197 horsepower, is adequate for around-town duty, but the best choice is the available 4. 0-liter v6 and its 251 horsepower. But it's a big vehicle, however, and is not nimble. There will be noticeable body lean in the turns and the ride can feel floaty at highway speeds. The honda odyssey and nissan quest are more car-like and sportier to drive.  on the other hand, the town & country's entertainment and seating options are the best in the class, matched only by the dodge grand caravan. The standard stow 'n go seating tucks the second-row seats nicely into the floor, and when those seats are up, the floor bins offer storage space. The rear seats fold into the floor on all models, allowing a perfectly flat, voluminous rear storage area. The swivel 'n go option is great for family trips; the second row turns to face the third row with a table in between, making it an activity center for the kids. There are also many entertainment choices.  for 2010 there are only minimal changes: the driver and front passenger seats have active head restraints, a rear obstacle detection display is in the vehicle information center, and the 4. 0-liter v6 has a revised final-drive ratio which improves fuel economy.  the town & country is a great vehicle for families that need to haul kids and cargo on a regular basis. Also offered are chrysler's uconnect multimedia suite 1,300) with a rearview camera, chrysler's uconnect phone hands-free cell phone link and chrysler's uconnect gps, which adds a navigation system with real-time traffic and voice activation to the uconnect tunes 30-gigabyte hard-drive radio. Three rear dvd entertainment systems are offered. The lx model is available with entertainment group 1 2,120), which has a single rear dvd screen, and also comes with sirius satellite radio, a rearview camera, and a 115-volt power outlet. Entertainment group 3 2,020) for the limited model has two rear video screens with two dvd players, plus sirius backseat tv. A trailer tow group 600) includes heavy-duty engine cooling, trailer wiring harness, and load-leveling rear air suspension. Stand-alone options include two integrated child seats 225) for the second row, a sunroof 995), a power-folding third-row seat 595), and sirius backseat tv 495). Several of the higher line standard features are also available for the lower line models as options.  the limited is available with a safety group that includes rear cross path and blind spot alert systems, along with uconnect phone, an ipod control, and auto-dimming mirror 825). The nissan quest, kia sedona, honda odyssey, and toyota sienna are all within a few inches, plus or minus, in overall length. The roof is wide at the top, also contributing to the boxy look.  the snout features a large grille with ties to other chrysler products. The body sides have a clean, simple design. The rear liftgate is available with power operation, which is handy, but the rear glass doesn't open separately, which isn't. Chrome accents on the front and rear fascias, door handles, belt molding, and mirrors lend an upscale appearance. interiorthe town & country's competitive advantage can be found on the inside. While ambiance and materials quality are not tops in the class, thoughtful features are.  hard plastic dominates the dash and doors. The only padded surfaces are found on the captain's chairs' fold-down armrests, and they are an unimpressive looking rubberized material. The gauges are easy to spot and the various controls are clearly marked.  the radio and/or uconnect tunes/gps system is set high on the center of the dash for easy access. With either system, the controls are easy to use, but those on the right side are a bit of a reach for the driver. The cd/dvd changer is also set low, making it a possible distraction to use while driving. The gearshift is mounted between the radio and the instrument panel. Both systems have a 30-gigabyte hard drive to hold music, pictures, and, with the navigation system, navigation map information. Both systems are capable of holding thousands of songs.  front-seat room and comfort are typical for a minivan. The front captain's chairs afford an upright driving position with an suv-like view of the road. There is plenty of head room, and leg room will only be lacking for the tallest drivers. A tilt steering wheel and available adjustable pedals should help most drivers tailor a comfortable seating position, but we'd still like the steering wheel to telescope.  the clever features start with the storage solutions. Chrysler provides two glove boxes and some cubbies in the center stack for small items storage. A total of 13 cupholders are found throughout the van, so the whole team has a place to put the root beers after the little league game. The premium center console is more impressive. This top level slides back to reveal a larger storage bin below it. The lower bin also slides back. With both layers pushed back, the top level moves back a total of 21 inches, which allows parents up front to prepare lunch for the kids and pass it back in a safe manner. The premium console is also removable.  the rear seating solutions are better yet. All town & country models have a deep well behind the third row, which is a great place to put groceries so they won't slide around. With the rear seats in place, there is an impressive 32. 3 cubic feet of cargo room. All models have a 60/40 split folding third-row bench seat t. Benefiting from all-wheel drive and a fully independent suspension, the edge is easier to control than a truck-based suv in the snow or on wet, slippery roads. Getting in and out of it is easier, too. Yet it gives up nothing in passenger and cargo space. In fact, the back seats in the edge are roomier than those in the explorer, a benefit of its design.  the edge is not small. Considered a midsize crossover utility vehicle, the edge competes with the nissan murano, toyota highlander and cuvs, all of which are larger than their slippery styling suggests.  we found the edge roomy and comfortable with fully foldable seats for big cargo carrying. It drives well, with good performance from a modern v6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.  the edge has a contemporary look we find appealing. We like its bold chrome grille. Ford sync communications and entertainment system is available on the 2008 edge, allowing the driver to change radio stations and make phone calls using voice commands. The available navigation system adds voice activation, the driver's window now powers up or down with one touch, and a new interior appearance package has red seating surfaces with contrasting stitching. A power liftgate, a universal garage door opener, and 20-inch wheels are available. lineupthe 2008 ford edge comes in three trim levels: se, sel, and limited. The reason is that it has a wide track and a long wheelbase with short overhangs. What does all this mean? (the track is the distance between the left and right wheels. The long wheelbase and wide track are not just about looks; they make for a more stable vehicle because the majority of the mass is inside the wheels. A go-kart is the ultimate expression of this look. We're not suggesting the edge looks like a go-kart, but its aggressive stance makes it stand apart from the tippy look of traditional suvs with relatively narrow track measurements and massive front and rear overhangs.  the edge features ford's newly rediscovered bold, american design. The big chrome grille is placed well forward and has wide chrome slats that merge into the relatively small headlights at each side. The high hood is short as the windshield rakes forward more like a sports car or modern minivan.  despite having a relatively high waist line with shallow side windows, the edge does not appear as stubby as photographs sometimes suggest. The sporty look is helped by pronounced fender flares and large wheels. The rear tailgate slopes quite significantly and is nicely rounded, avoiding the truck-like rear tailgates found on many suvs. We found the rear design to be a cross between a lexus rx and a bmw x3, which cannot be a bad thing.  the vista roof adds expansive twin glass moonroofs that cover the whole roof, providing all passengers with a clear view of the sky. There is only a foot-wide panel between the front and rear panels that is not transparent. interiorthe edge combines a stylish, comfortable interior with lots of cargo-hauling utility.  front-seat occupants find a generous amount of room, largely due to the vehicle's generous width. There is a large center console with a storage box big enough for a laptop computer. Two decent cupholders reside alongside the substantial shifter. The center stack is angled outward to make it easy to reach the large knobs for the climate and entertainment controls. The interior appearance package adds red seat inserts and contrasting red stitching that combine to give the interior a sporty look. It can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players (it will charge an ipod). To issue a voice command, the driver hits a steering wheel button and speaks the command. Occupants can tell the system to play a specific artist, album or track stored on an mp3 player. Headroom is also reasonable in the rear, even with the optional vista roof. The rear-center passenger even gets more room than normal in a vehicle of this size, thanks to the wide track. Getting in and out is easier thanks to rear wheels that are placed well back and thus allow for less intrusion from the wheel wells.  carrying cargo is an area where the edge excels. The tailgate lifts to reveal a wide opening. With the rear seats are in place there's a reasonable amount of cargo room, but pressing a button automatically reclines the rear seats to open up 69. 0 cubic feet of storage space on a nearly flat floor. Furthermore, the front passenger seatback can be folded forward to provide a mostly level floor space for long objects all the way to the dashboard. Value and fuel efficiency in a big family sedan. introductionthe chevrolet impala is a big family sedan close in size to the toyota avalon. The impala is a comfortable and convenient car, practical and enjoyable to drive, with decent performance and fuel economy and competitive pricing.  the impala competes with full-size cars, such as the ford taurus, chrysler 300 and dodge charger, and mid-size cars, such as the honda accord, toyota camry and nissan altima.  impala carries over to 2011 largely unchanged, though there are some minor packaging changes. 2011 chevrolet impala models are available with bluetooth and the latest version of onstar gen 9. 0. All 2011 impalas come with body-color body side moldings.  the chevrolet impala is front-wheel drive with a choice of two v6 engines. The 3. 5-liter v6 that comes standard on the impala lt and ls models generates 211 horsepower and 216 pound-feet of torque and gets an epa-estimated 18/29 miles per gallon city/highway. The impala ltz comes with a larger 3. 9-liter v6 rated at 230 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque and 17/27 mpg.  for 2011, both the 3. 5-liter v6 and the 3. 9-liter v6 are flexfuel-capable, meaning they can run on e85 ethanol. Fuel economy drops precipitously with e85, however, tumbling 7 miles per gallon in both cases to 14/22 mpg for the 3. 5-liter and 13/20 mpg for the 3. 9-liter.  on the road, the impala is very stable, a nice cruiser. The impala has a big trunk with a big lid that simplifies loading cargo, and it has a generous capacity. It's an attractive car. Last redesigned for the 2006 model year, it is aging, however.  the big headlamps have a jeweled appearance with three independent lighting units and are smoothly integrated into the front end. Flat-blade windshield wipers provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise. Build quality is good, with tight gaps of 3. 5mm or less between body panels.  aside from minor badging, the only exterior differentiations among the trim levels are the wheels and the standard rear spoiler on the ltz. interiorinside is a roomy cabin. The seats have fairly firm cushions and decent lumbar support compared to previous models. A twin-brow instrument panel wraps around into the doors. We found the instrument panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. Interior materials are a grade above average.  the dual-zone climate control system is a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. It can support up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The glovebox is large enough to actually hold stuff.  the base audio system comes with six speakers, am/fm/cd/mp3 capability, and xm satellite radio. It features speed-sensing volume control and a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. Too many radios nowadays are too complex or have tiny buttons difficult to operate underway. Not so with gm's radios. The impala sound system is sophisticated yet easy to operate. The optional system adds an in-dash six-cd changer. The premium audio system is bose. Turn-by-turn navigation directs the driver through the route by using the digital readout lines in the radio head. Directions are downloaded by the onstar advisor to the vehicle and can be played back or paused anywhere from start to destination. Besides being easy to use (all directions are downloaded to the car by an advisor) turn-by-turn is less expensive than a gps navigation system.  the back seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The forward-flipping rear seat cushions reveal a storage tub underneath that can contain spills or transport a variety of items. The tub also serves as a covered storage area beneath the seat with cushions down, and exposes convenient grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped forward. They feature variable valve timing, which changes the orientation of the camshaft, automatically adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust valves for better performance, economy, and emissions.  the 3. 5-liter e85-compatible v6 that's standard on the ls and lt has variable valve timing and generates 207 horsepower and 215 pound-feet of torque. It gets an epa-rated 18/29 mpg city/highway on gasoline and 14/22 city/highway on e85 ethanol.  the 3. 9-liter e85-compatible v6 has variable valve timing and produces 230 horsepower and 238 pound-feet of torque. The rear suspension uses a multi-link setup with gas-charged struts, coil springs, and a stabilizer bar. Ls and lt models come with the softer fe1 suspension, while the ltz has the performance-tuned fe3 setup and more responsive handling.
