2011 dodge caravan review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Updated and fully competitive in the class. introductiondodge grand caravan has been substantially revised for the 2011 model year, and we think the changes elevate this minivan on the consideration scale. The dodge grand caravan and chrysler town & country offer class-leading interior convenience. the 2011 dodge grand caravan benefits from an extensive midcycle update. Changes for 2011 include revised styling, a new engine, an upgraded suspension, and a reworked interior. for 2011, grand caravan has been repositioned to sell mostly below $30,000 while its chrysler counterpart, the town & country, is packaged to sell above $30,000. For the grand caravan, that means several features are no longer available, including sirius backseat tv, flotv, a power third-row seat, a dual-screen rear dvd entertainment system, and swivel 'n go seating with second-row seats that turn rearward to face a table that stows in the floor. However, the key features that make the grand caravan a compelling purchase as a people mover remain. the new engine for 2011 is a 3. 6-liter v6 that replaces three archaic v6s from 2010, offering more power and improved fuel economy. The new engine fixes a weak point and makes the dodge competitive with the toyota sienna and honda odyssey. This fine new 3. 6-liter v6 is mated to a mediocre 6-speed automatic transmission, resulting in a combination that delivers adequate response for most drivers. the 2011 grand caravan suspension is stiffer than before and the van rides lower, making it more responsive to driver inputs than the 2010 model. Gone are the annoying wallow and float characteristics we noted with the 2010 model. Yet ride quality is still quite smooth. Like all modern minivans, the grand caravan is big, so it can be a beast to handle in tight quarters. Grand caravan, sienna, and odyssey are all the same size: extra large. Indeed, we should call these vehicles midi-vans or vans because there is nothing mini about them. for 2011, the interior of the grand caravan is upgraded, and we find the new look far more attractive. The materials are richer, though, like most of its rivals, hard plastic dominates the dashboard. Still, the new soft-touch door tops, redesigned gauges and nice bits of trim are welcome. grand caravan is about usable space. Super stow 'n go is standard. The third-row seats fold into the well behind them, and with all the seats down the grand caravan can accept a 4x8 sheet of plywood. the grand caravan's unique cargo and entertainment features make it a strong contender in the minivan class, and the 2011 changes only make it better. Families will like it, especially because those entertainment features will make for more enjoyable family trips. That is, after all, the reason the grand caravan remains so popular. While some options are gone, there are plenty of entertainment features that will help keep the kids occupied. They include three types of hard-drive radio, sirius satellite radio, rear dvd entertainment, a wireless cell phone link, and a mobile internet hot spot. Its designers focused on interior creature comforts, such as the popular stow 'n go seating system. Stow 'n go consists of bins in the floor behind the first row of seats, and second-row seats that can be folded into those bins, resulting in a flat load floor for easily carrying larger objects. Options include a rearview camera, rear park assist, rear cross path and blind spot alert. All-wheel drive is not available. walkaroundthe dodge grand caravan is attractive, as minivans go. The look is less boxy for 2011, as dodge has softened the lines a bit while adding a touch of sportiness. for starters, the 2011 grand caravan sits an inch lower than before. Up front, it has a sportier fascia with mesh inserts, a revised version of the dodge crosshair grille, a slightly reshaped hood and quad headlights. At the rear, the liftgate is slightly modified to accept new dodge lettering, there is a body color roof spoiler, the fascia is new, there a step plate with chrome trim, and the taillights add leds. Sixteen-inch wheels are standard. We think the available five-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels look better. a minivan shape does not lend itself to artistic sculpture. A description of the overall shape of this current generation of the dodge grand caravan wouldn't sound too much different from a description of the 1982 model. There is a big box behind, where all the people and cargo fit, and a smaller box in front, for the engine. That very efficient outline defines every minivan on the road. all the leading minivans, including toyota sienna, honda odyssey, and chrysler town & country, are within an inch or two of the grand caravan in overall dimensions. The grand caravan has a 202. 8-inch overall length and a 121. 2-inch wheelbase. these so-called minivans are quite large. However, they share their basic architecture with cars, using unit-body structures and front-wheel-drive platforms, with the engine mounted transversely. Conversely, full-size vans, such as the chevrolet express, are built on truck platforms, with body-on-frame structures, rear-wheel-drive platforms and giant, longitudinally mounted v8 engines. Minivans are lighter, more fuel-efficient and offer more responsive handling than the full-size vans. interiorthe 2011 grand caravan gets a new interior design, and it's a considerable upgrade versus the 2010 model. The dashboard is still hard plastic, but that's the norm for the class. The look and feel is much better, with a more flowing, one-piece design. The door tops are now padded, adding a touch of comfort, and the cloth and leather upholstery are upgraded. We liked the stain-resistant cloth seats on last year's models, but the cloth seats on the 2011 models look quite good as well. up front, the instrumentation is changed for 2011, with bigger black dials offset by blue-tinted graphics and chrome trim. 2010 chrysler town & country review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Family-friendly minivan. introductionminivans offer roominess, convenience, versatility and fuel efficiency. There is no more sensible choice for a family with more than a couple of children. Chrysler was the first into this market and, long after other manufacturers have left it, chrysler remains, with the chrysler town & country and the dodge caravan. Of the two, the town & country is generally more upscale, and chrysler bills the town & country as the ultimate family friendly vehicle. the 2010 chrysler town & country is offered with three v6 engines. The base engine, a 3. 3-liter v6 or 175 horsepower, doesn't offer much in the way of either power or fuel efficiency. The 3. 8-liter v6, with 197 horsepower, is adequate for around-town duty, but the best choice is the available 4. 0-liter v6 and its 251 horsepower. But it's a big vehicle, however, and is not nimble. There will be noticeable body lean in the turns and the ride can feel floaty at highway speeds. The honda odyssey and nissan quest are more car-like and sportier to drive. on the other hand, the town & country's entertainment and seating options are the best in the class, matched only by the dodge grand caravan. The standard stow 'n go seating tucks the second-row seats nicely into the floor, and when those seats are up, the floor bins offer storage space. The rear seats fold into the floor on all models, allowing a perfectly flat, voluminous rear storage area. The swivel 'n go option is great for family trips; the second row turns to face the third row with a table in between, making it an activity center for the kids. There are also many entertainment choices. for 2010 there are only minimal changes: the driver and front passenger seats have active head restraints, a rear obstacle detection display is in the vehicle information center, and the 4. 0-liter v6 has a revised final-drive ratio which improves fuel economy. the town & country is a great vehicle for families that need to haul kids and cargo on a regular basis. Also offered are chrysler's uconnect multimedia suite 1,300) with a rearview camera, chrysler's uconnect phone hands-free cell phone link and chrysler's uconnect gps, which adds a navigation system with real-time traffic and voice activation to the uconnect tunes 30-gigabyte hard-drive radio. Three rear dvd entertainment systems are offered. The lx model is available with entertainment group 1 2,120), which has a single rear dvd screen, and also comes with sirius satellite radio, a rearview camera, and a 115-volt power outlet. Entertainment group 3 2,020) for the limited model has two rear video screens with two dvd players, plus sirius backseat tv. A trailer tow group 600) includes heavy-duty engine cooling, trailer wiring harness, and load-leveling rear air suspension. Stand-alone options include two integrated child seats 225) for the second row, a sunroof 995), a power-folding third-row seat 595), and sirius backseat tv 495). Several of the higher line standard features are also available for the lower line models as options. the limited is available with a safety group that includes rear cross path and blind spot alert systems, along with uconnect phone, an ipod control, and auto-dimming mirror 825). The nissan quest, kia sedona, honda odyssey, and toyota sienna are all within a few inches, plus or minus, in overall length. The roof is wide at the top, also contributing to the boxy look. the snout features a large grille with ties to other chrysler products. The body sides have a clean, simple design. The rear liftgate is available with power operation, which is handy, but the rear glass doesn't open separately, which isn't. Chrome accents on the front and rear fascias, door handles, belt molding, and mirrors lend an upscale appearance. interiorthe town & country's competitive advantage can be found on the inside. While ambiance and materials quality are not tops in the class, thoughtful features are. hard plastic dominates the dash and doors. The only padded surfaces are found on the captain's chairs' fold-down armrests, and they are an unimpressive looking rubberized material. The gauges are easy to spot and the various controls are clearly marked. the radio and/or uconnect tunes/gps system is set high on the center of the dash for easy access. With either system, the controls are easy to use, but those on the right side are a bit of a reach for the driver. The cd/dvd changer is also set low, making it a possible distraction to use while driving. The gearshift is mounted between the radio and the instrument panel. Both systems have a 30-gigabyte hard drive to hold music, pictures, and, with the navigation system, navigation map information. Both systems are capable of holding thousands of songs. front-seat room and comfort are typical for a minivan. The front captain's chairs afford an upright driving position with an suv-like view of the road. There is plenty of head room, and leg room will only be lacking for the tallest drivers. A tilt steering wheel and available adjustable pedals should help most drivers tailor a comfortable seating position, but we'd still like the steering wheel to telescope. the clever features start with the storage solutions. Chrysler provides two glove boxes and some cubbies in the center stack for small items storage. A total of 13 cupholders are found throughout the van, so the whole team has a place to put the root beers after the little league game. The premium center console is more impressive. This top level slides back to reveal a larger storage bin below it. The lower bin also slides back. With both layers pushed back, the top level moves back a total of 21 inches, which allows parents up front to prepare lunch for the kids and pass it back in a safe manner. The premium console is also removable. the rear seating solutions are better yet. All town & country models have a deep well behind the third row, which is a great place to put groceries so they won't slide around. With the rear seats in place, there is an impressive 32. 3 cubic feet of cargo room. All models have a 60/40 split folding third-row bench seat t.
